WonderCake is a digital Instagram exhibition conceived, curated, and created by Nomi Abeliovich.
The project began as a personal quest in search of cakes created by fellow artists and designers, specifically ones that push beyond their apparent boundaries as objects of desire. Showcased in a virtual chamber, the otherwise impossible collection aims to carve a space for cakes in art and design.
WonderCake is organized in four categories: artificialia, naturalia, exotica, and scientifica, echoing the Wunderkammers (Rooms of Wonder) classification system used to display the curiosities brought back by explorers from their quests around the world.
The exhibition design utilizes Instagram’s features and works within its constraints, offering an alternative viewing experience despite the app’s familiar setting.
By choosing to display the exhibition horizontally on the grid, the viewer is invited to tilt their screen, transforming the habitual vertical scroll into a horizontal exploration. Viewers are then free to explore the entire collection and take a closer look at each artwork and additional information by zooming in.
WonderCake sets out to explore the boundaries of cake; is it an object or an event? When does a cake cease to be a cake? Can anything be transformed into a cake? What remains of a cake that no longer exists? Could cake be a verb; to cake or not-to-cake? Must a cake be realized, or can it exist simply as an idea?
